DIY Window Clings Header

Window clings are a fun and easy way to decorate for a holiday! But sometimes, it’s more fun to make your own. Whether you need a craft to do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, or the Leprechauns need to prank your kids while they’re at school, these window clings are a fun and easy craft that you can do with items you have just lying around the house!

You’ll need:

What you'll need to make your own window clings

  • White Glue
  • Dish Soap
  • Coloring (We used glitter glue but you could use food coloring.)
  • Paint (for a matte look)
  • Stencils (you can download what we used here) or cookie cutters
  • Plastic Page Protectors

  1. Decide What You’re Going to Make

If you have younger crafters, or don’t want to stress about all the edges of your clings being even, you can use a cookie cutter to pour the cling mixture into and let it set. If you want to try your hand at painting the window clings, pick a few pictures you want to try and paint, and print them out. You can use our stencils for free. For St. Patrick’s Day, we created some fun shapes, like a shamrock, rainbow, and leprechaun feet (you know how those tricky leprechauns can be. Getting into everything!) As you’re picking out your shapes, we found that bigger, simpler shapes are better if you’re painting. You can’t do a lot of details when making these.

  1. Put Your Stencils in Your Page Protectors

Put your cookie cutters on top of a page protector, or put your stencils inside of the page protector. This will help keep the window cling mixture flat on one side and able to stick to your window or mirrors easily.

  1. Pour 1 Teaspoon of White Glue

You'll need 1 teaspoon of white glue to make your won window clings.

Using a paper plate, pour out one teaspoon of white glue.

  1. Pour ¼ Teaspoon of Dish Soap

Use 1/4 teaspoon of dishsoap

Mix these two together. This is your main window cling mixture.

  1. Add Color

Use glitter, paint or food coloring to color your window cling mixture.

There are a lot of different ways that you can color your window clings. We used glitter glue to add dimension and color. We also added some acrylic paint on some that made the clings more matte. You could add food coloring to color yours. If you don’t add paint or dye, or you just use a small amount, the window clings will have a transparent look. We liked how both looked.

  1. Mix well and paint

Mix window cling mixture together.

Pour the mixture into the cookie cutters, or begin painting it onto your stencils. If you decide to paint, make sure to paint evenly and thick. On ours, there were still some spots that weren’t as even when they dried, but they still look good!

  1. Let Dry

Let window clings dry and then hange them.

You can let your clings dry overnight, or for a few hours. We left ours for two hours and they dried pretty quickly. You can add another layer if you want them to be thicker.

  1. Hang and enjoy!

We hung our window clings on the bathroom mirror and on our sliding glass door.
